Minnetonka Crappie Winners Report

From Uno: pre-fished the day before the tourney and found zero fish in the shallow cuts. I found a few in Peavy and Seton and figured we’d start in Peavy to avoid crowds. When we got there a boat was already in the spot I wanted to fish, so we slid down the bank from him. I caught a keeper on the first cast, and we had ten in the first half hour, including the big one (1lb 7 oz). It slowed way down after that. I didn’t have many other options, so we stayed. Butcher caught two nice ones off a dock before we headed into lunch with a slim lead. We went back to Peavy after lunch because I figured we had the size we needed there. We caught a few small upgrades and saw Lulu and co. coming up in the standings. I switched to a more natural color plastic and put on a 1/64th ounce jig to try and finesse a couple more fish. It worked for 2 more keepers, including the 1 lb. 2 oz crappie late in the day that sealed the win. Butcher had to borrow a rod (his boat was in the shop with tackle), and he fished with the same plastic all day! He also caught at least half the keepers. Something to be said for simplicity. All fish were on plastics. Minnows caught bass and hair jigs caught nothing. The fish were in 3-8 feet  round the taller old weeds. It was a fun day, and I always enjoy the crappie event for the comradery it brings. Thanks to Don (the Butcher) for being an excellent swabbie and bringing me the elixir of life (Diet Coke).
